Brief Biography

The Codman Family is one of New England's oldest and wealthiest. Charles Russell was born in Paris. He graduated Harvard's Law school in 1852 and served as a Colonel in the Civil War, leading the Massachusetts 45th Regiment. After the war Codman turned to the family merchant business and held several local political positions. He served on Harvard's Board of Overseers and acted as its president for three of those years. Like other New Englanders, in the 1884 election Codman voted for the Democrats and became a mugwump.
