Brief Biography

Estes served in the Union Army until he was wounded early at the Battle of Bull Run. He had previously been employed in the book binding business, and when he returned to Boston he immersed himself in publishing. He partnered with Charles Lauriet, where Estes' company became renounced for travel and leisure books as well as art and poetry. After 1898, Lauriet retired and Estes took over the firm. His company was one of the most prolific publishers of anti-imperialist material during the movement. Estes was close with Charles Codman and Gamaliel Bradford and was an early activist and organizer for the League and particularly adept at recruitment.
