Brief Biography

William Cushing Wait was born in a Boston suburb and forged a long law career of distinction in the city. He graduated from Harvard in 1885 and began a successful firm with friend Samuel Elder. In 1893 he was appointed to the Superior Court of Massachusetts, and in 1902 was promoted to the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. It is most likely that Wait's involvement with the anti-imperialist movement stemmed from his interest in both local issues and the law. 1898-1899 marked the most contentious legal period in the 'great debate' and thus Wait added his name and efforts.
